Xi Ding, real name Chen Maolin, was born in Qiong Lai Canton in Sichuan province, in 1933. He is a First-Class artist by the Chinese government. He was the Assistant-Chairman and Secretariat of the Chinese Artists Association of the Shaanxi province. He graduated from the Chengdu Art College (now the Sichuan Institute of Fine Art). He lives in Beijing, and his studio name is ‘Xunwu Zhai’.
He is a member of the Chinese Artists’ Association, Chinese Calligraphers’ Association, and Chinese Scientific Artists’ Association. He was invited by the Chinese Ministry of Culture and the Chinese Art Association to become a Judge of the Sixth and Seventh Chinese National Fine Art Exhibition Committees. He was a professor at the Journalism Department of Zhengzhou University, and the commissioner of Chinese Artists’ Association’s Cartoon Art Committee. He is the commissioner of The Shaanxi Province Federation of Literary and Art Circles, and the Title Analysis and Judging Committee. He was an editor of The Grand Dictionary of Fine Art, and chief editor of ‘Cartoon Fine Art Book’ (1160 thousand words) for the Shaanxi People’s Art Publishing House.
His works have been displayed at the Sixth, Seventh and Eighth China National Fine Art Exhibition, and have also exhibited in Japan, Hong Kong and Singapore. Moreover, his works have been sought by the China Yan Huang Emperor Gallery, and other local exhibitions, galleries and individuals in America, UK, France, Germany, Korea, Singapore, Belgium, Holland, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and others.
He painted the propylene mural ‘Treasure of Chang’an’ which is 25m in length and 2.2m in height for Xijing Hotel of Xi’an government.
He wrote the calligraphies for China Telecom, Today’s Topic of BTV, Junen Orient, Asia Air, Galaxy Asset, to name but a few.
He is listed and acknowledged in ‘Chinese Contemporary Artists’ Directory’, ‘Dictionary of International Biography’ (Cambridge, the UK), among others.
In 2000, he was invited by the Central Saint Martins College of Art & Design to give them a lecture ‘Xi Ding’s Art’ in London. Later, he traveled and painted in the UK, France, Germany, Italy, Austria, Holland and other countries.
